Loyalty Card Wording Examples: What to Write on Your Stamp Card

Good loyalty card wording covers three things: the reward, how to earn it, and any rule that matters at the counter. For example: "Buy 9 coffees, get your 10th free. One stamp per visit." Lead with the reward. On a digital card, the reward shows on the card and the rule goes on your counter sign.

Most loyalty cards fail on wording, not on the reward. "Earn rewards with every visit!" tells a customer nothing. "6 visits, then a free blow-dry" tells them everything. Below are lines you can copy, sorted by the job each line does, plus examples by business type. Every example is a starting point written by LoyalStamps, not a rule and not a real shop's card.

The five lines every loyalty card needs

  1. Your name. So the card is obviously yours.
  2. The reward line. The headline. What they get, in plain words.
  3. The rule line. What earns a stamp, and how many it takes.
  4. One line of fine print. Only the rule that would otherwise start an argument.
  5. Where to scan or show the card. For a digital card, this lives on the sign next to your QR code.

If a line does not do one of these jobs, cut it.

On a paper card, all five lines can fit on the card. A digital card like LoyalStamps works differently: the card shows your customer's stamps and the reward, and nothing else. So the rule line and fine print need a home outside the app: the sign next to your QR code, your menu, your website, or your social bio.

Reward line examples

The reward line is the one people remember. Lead with the free thing, not the effort.

  • "Your 10th coffee is on us."
  • "Buy 9, get the 10th free."
  • "6 visits, then a free blow-dry."
  • "Every 8th wash is free."
  • "Fill your card, get a free class."
  • "5 grooms, then a free nail trim."
  • "Collect 6 stamps for a free spa add-on."
  • "A free pastry at 5 stamps. A free drink at 10."

Rule line examples

Say what earns a stamp in one sentence, using the words your staff already use.

  • "One stamp per drink."
  • "One stamp per paid visit."
  • "One stamp per order over $10." (Example amount. Use your own.)
  • "One stamp per class you attend."
  • "One stamp per treatment."

Be careful with "Buy 9, get the 10th free" versus "10 stamps, then a free coffee." They sound alike but are different deals: in the first, the tenth drink is the reward; in the second, the eleventh is. Pick one and print it word for word. Our guide on how many stamps on a loyalty card explains the choice.

Fine print that prevents arguments

Fine print exists to settle the questions staff get asked twice a week. Use one line, two at most, and put it where people will read it before they pay: on the counter sign, on the menu, or on your website. Pick from:

  • "One stamp per visit."
  • "Stamps are for paid purchases."
  • "One reward per visit."
  • "Rewards have no cash value."
  • "Group orders earn one stamp."

Every extra condition makes the card feel less like a thank-you. Blackout days, long exclusion lists, and "at management's discretion" turn a free coffee into a negotiation. If you want an expiry date on rewards, check your local consumer rules before you print it, and say it plainly: "Rewards are valid for 3 months after your card is full." (Example period.)

Counter sign wording

The sign next to your QR code does most of the selling, so give it one job: get the scan.

  • "Scan for your stamp. 10 stamps = a free coffee."
  • "New here? Scan with your phone camera. No app needed."
  • "Scan before you go. Your 6th visit comes with a free add-on."
  • "Collect stamps on your phone. Ask us how."

Keep the reward line in the biggest type, and put the QR code at eye level where people pay. For placement and launch ideas, see how to promote a loyalty program.

What staff should say

Written wording only works if someone says it out loud. Give the team one line and ask them to use it with every customer for two weeks:

  • Cafe: "Do you collect our stamps? Scan here and this coffee counts."
  • Salon or spa: "Scan before you leave and today's visit goes on your card."
  • Food truck or cart: "Scan the window code and this one is stamp number one."

Wording examples by business type

Business Example reward line Example rule line Example fine print
Cafe Your 10th coffee is on us One stamp per drink One stamp per visit
Bakery A free pastry when your card is full One stamp per purchase Rewards have no cash value
Bubble tea shop 8 drinks, then one free One stamp per drink Toppings not included in the reward
Food truck Every 9th meal is free One stamp per meal One reward per visit
Hair salon 6 visits, then a free blow-dry One stamp per paid appointment One stamp per visit
Barber 6 cuts, then a free beard trim One stamp per cut Stamps are for paid services
Nail salon 5 visits, then a free gel upgrade One stamp per service One reward per visit
Day spa or massage 6 visits, then a free add-on One stamp per treatment One reward per visit
Gym or yoga studio 10 classes, then a free class One stamp per class attended Stamps are for attended classes
Car wash Every 8th wash is free One stamp per wash One stamp per vehicle per day
Pet groomer 5 grooms, then a free nail trim One stamp per groom One stamp per pet per visit
Florist 5 bouquets, then a free small arrangement One stamp per bouquet Rewards have no cash value

These rows are examples, not benchmarks. On a digital card, the reward line is what customers see on the card; the rule line and fine print go on your sign, menu, or website. For more on choosing the deal itself, see these loyalty program examples. Running a spa? Our spa loyalty app guide has reward ideas for massage and facial clients.

For cards with two reward levels, word it as two clear steps, smaller reward first, as in the last example above. More reward shapes are in our list of loyalty reward ideas.

Wording to avoid

  • Vague promises. "Earn exciting rewards" says nothing. Name the reward.
  • A percentage as the headline. "15% off" is harder to picture than "a free croissant." Save discounts for one-off offers.
  • Points language on a stamp card. If customers collect stamps, call them stamps.
  • "Free" with a catch. If the free item has conditions, it is not the headline.
  • Long terms. If the fine print needs a second line, the rule is too complicated.

Moving your wording to a digital card

Good wording carries straight over. It just lives in two places now. Your reward line becomes the reward you set on the card, and that is what customers see in the app or on the web, alongside their stamps. LoyalStamps cards do not carry terms or a description, so your rule line and fine print go on the sign next to your QR code, on your menu, and on your website or social bio. Staff say the same words at the counter.

A few lines become unnecessary. You no longer need "Lost cards cannot be replaced," because progress stays with the customer's account. You no longer need "Card must be stamped by staff," because each visit is added after a scan. When you want to change the reward, you update it in the vendor app instead of reprinting a stack of cards. When the rule changes, you swap one sign, not every card in circulation. Here is how digital stamp cards work, step by step.

How LoyalStamps fits

LoyalStamps is a QR digital stamp card for small businesses. You set the stamp count and reward, add a second reward level if you like, and print your QR code. The card shows each customer's stamps and the reward; your rule and fine print go on your sign, menu, or website. Customers join by scanning with any phone camera and entering their email on a web page, or with the free LoyalStamps app. Vouchers and Blasts (push notifications to app users, with a monthly send limit) cover one-off offers, and the mini CRM shows who is coming back. No POS, no hardware. Vendor Pro is $10 a month or $100 a year after a 7-day free trial. Starting from scratch? See how to make a digital punch card.

Loyalty card wording FAQ

What should I write on a loyalty card?

Your name, a reward line, a rule line, and one line of fine print. For example: "Your 10th coffee is on us. One stamp per drink. One stamp per visit." Lead with the reward and keep the rule to one sentence. On a digital card like LoyalStamps, the card shows the stamps and the reward, so the rule and fine print go on your counter sign or menu.

How do I word "buy 9, get 1 free" on a stamp card?

Write it exactly as the deal works. "Buy 9, get the 10th free" means the tenth item is the reward. "10 stamps, then a free coffee" means the customer pays for ten and the eleventh is free. Pick one and print it word for word.

Do I need terms and conditions on a stamp card?

Keep it to one line, two at most, covering the question staff get asked most, such as "One stamp per visit" or "Rewards have no cash value." With LoyalStamps, the card shows only the stamps and the reward, so put your terms on the counter sign, your menu, or your website. Long terms make a thank-you feel like a contract.

What should the sign next to my QR code say?

One instruction and the reward, for example: "Scan for your stamp. 10 stamps = a free coffee." If customers can join without an app, say so: "Scan with your phone camera. No app needed."

Should my loyalty card have an expiry date?

It is your choice. If you add one, check your local consumer rules first, keep it generous, and state it plainly in one line. Many small shops leave it off to keep the card simple.

Can I change the wording on a digital stamp card later?

Yes. With LoyalStamps you change the reward in the vendor app instead of reprinting cards. Your rule and fine print live on your sign, menu, or website, so update those too, and tell regulars at the counter when the rule changes so nobody feels short-changed.
